Father’s Day – Daddy’s Day Off

It was Father’s Day yesterday, and unlike a lot of fathers out there, I didn’t get any presents or cards. At least no physical presents other than a chocolate lava cake. And since neither my wife, SO, or son, Jay, are big cake eaters, it’s pretty much all mine. The real present they gave me though, was a couple of days peace and quiet.

You see, SO had to go away for work on Friday and Saturday, and with Jay on holiday, she decided to ask if he wanted to go along. When he said yes, I could’ve jumped for joy. Not that I don’t love him or cherish the time we get to spend together. But there are things I don’t get to do when he’s around, and with them gone from Friday morning through to Sunday afternoon, it gave me some time to do those things.

So what did I do over those two days? Well, other than walking around in my underwear (shorts actually, but I usually just tell people underwear), I got to watch what I wanted on TV, and played some games that I don’t get a chance to when Jay’s around.

I know, I know, I can do those things when he’s around or at night when he’s asleep. And we do sometimes. But a lot of the time when he goes to sleep, I’m already too tired to do those things, especially if my neck is bothering me. Which can make the simple act of sitting up and watching something uncomfortable at best, and painful a lot of the time. And the same goes for playing games on one of our consoles.

And as for when he’s around we tend to do things together, or he monopolises the TV. The funny thing, though, is that I actually do enjoy a lot of the shows he likes to watch, and it’s a lot less creepy watching them with him, than it would be if I watched them alone. I mean, who wants to think of a grown man sitting alone watching a TV show with an all teenage cast?

So, I did get a chance to watch more adult TV while he was away. The problem was that, I haven’t seen a lot of those shows in such a long time, so I wasn’t as into them as I used to be. And I wasn’t up to date on the storylines, so didn’t know what was going on all the time.

And as for games, when I do play, it tends to be games that we play together. Which is fun I admit, but sometimes you just want to play alone, or play games that are a little to adult for him to see. And this weekend I had the chance to do so, maybe a little too much.

The end result was that, even though I enjoyed myself and did what I wanted, I think I may have overdone it. So now it’s Monday and I’m sitting here exhausted from my relaxing weekend. Maybe it would’ve been better if they just stayed home?
